Chirmiri is well known for its coal mines (see Chirimiri Coalfield); mining began here in 1925. Chirmiri has a broad gauge railway link, used primarily to transport coal from the region. The coal industrial belt has developed in the region owing to the close proximity of the coalmines. The largest coal producing industry in India, the South Eastern Coalfields Limited is located in the region. Chirmiri is one of the 13 administrative areas of the coal industry. Government Chirmiri is administered by a (municipal corporation)of chhattisgarh Demographics As of 2001 India census,[1] Chirmiri had a population of 91,312, 53% male and 46% female. Chirmiri has an average literacy rate of 66% (male 75%, female 56%), higher than the national average of 59.5%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. Chirmiri is well connected from Bilaspur and daily direct trains and buses are available for transport. "Durg-Chirimiri" train facility is also available daily from chirimiri which connect "raipur" the capital of Chhattisgarh. chirmiri is connected to rewa (madhya pradesh)a train Rewa - Chirmiri fast passanger train. Culture The most famous place to visit is "Lord Jagnnath Temple"; made by the workers brought from Puri, it looks almost like the Jagannath Temple (Puri) at Puri.
